At the annual meeting of the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council of the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), I was presented with the 2015 Distinguished Leadership Award for my support of key issues affecting hospitals and health care in the Commonwealth. Presenting the award was Andy Carter, president and chief executive officer of The Hospital and Healthcare Council of Pennsylvania.
Nearly two months after Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed the entire state budget, House Republicans attempted to restore funding for critical human services programs on which the governor and the General Assembly agree. We voted to override about 20 of the most essential line items vetoed by the governor, which required a two-thirds vote in the House. I tried desperately to convince my Democrat colleagues to support us in this effort, but not one Democrat voted with us, and our attempt to restore funding for programs to assist victims of domestic violence, child abuse and other critical needs failed. I will stay in touch with service providers in my legislative district while I continue to fight for the funding they so desperately need.
