Mass Transit Funding Supports State's Leading Industries
I was in Gettysburg with other members of the House Appropriations Committee where we received a firsthand look at Pennsylvania’s leading industries – agriculture and tourism – and how they combine to have a significant impact on the state’s economy. Pennsylvania Agriculture has an estimated annual economic impact of $ 457 billion. Tourism is a $39 billion industry that generates $3.8 billion in tax revenue and supports more than 450,000 jobs. In fact, for every dollar the Commonwealth spends on tourism promotion, it receives a $267 return on that investment. As a strong supporter of state funding for mass transit, I found it interesting that the need for mass transit also exists in more rural regions of the state.
At the Capitol, I had the pleasure of being shadowed recently by Crystal Fountain and Justin Perry, students at Penncrest High School. Crystal, a junior, and Justin, a senior, are involved in the Penncrest Opportunities for Workplace Relationships program, a career mentoring program offered through the school.
